[00:00:00] Speaker A: Sam.
[00:00:26] Speaker B: Every March, millions of perfectly confident people sit down with a bracket, a pen, an absolute certainty.
And within 48 hours, ha. Those brackets, they're busted.
From the natural state. This is Public facing March Madness edition. I'm Joe Holman.
If you've ever wondered why offices suddenly go quiet in the middle of a Thursday afternoon in March, it's probably because someone's secretly streaming a basketball game.
That's right. March Madness. We're going to talk about what it is and why it exists.
March Madness is the nickname given to the NCAA Division 1 basketball tournament.
Now, every year, 68 teams compete in a single elimination bracket. You simply lose once and your season ends.
Now, you see, there are no second chances here.
There's no do overs, just one game.
And that sudden death pressure is what creates the magic. Now, the first NCAA tournament happened in 1939, and only eight teams played.
There were no giant arenas, no wall to wall television coverage, just basketball and a championship trophy.
Now, today, the tournament dominates sports television for nearly three weeks.
Millions watch, billions are spent, and every fan believes they've predicted the perfect bracket. There are office pools, family brackets, there are online contests.
Everyone picks winners and everyone predicts upsets.
And almost everyone gets it wrong.
Now, statistically speaking, filling out a perfect bracket is about as likely as getting struck by lightning twice.

Now, people love March Madness for a lot of reasons.
The secret behind March Madness is simple.
It's unpredictability.
Professional sports reward the strongest teams. But in the ncaa.
Well, let me introduce you to a new term. It's not really new, I'm just using it new to me. Right?
Let me introduce you to Cinderella team.
Now, every year, at least one small school shocks the nation.
They beat teams with bigger budgets, better rankings, and deeper rosters.
These teams earned the nickname Cinderella.
And just like the fairy tale, no one expected them to win.
For players, as far as a player perspective goes, or the players, well, the experience is overwhelming.
Bright lights, national television, thousands of screaming fans, and the knowledge that just one loss ends everything.
Now, some athletes say the pressure is terrifying.
Others say it's the greatest adrenaline rush of their lives.
Now, this, like anything else in life, has pros and cons to it.
Okay, so if we're going to go over the pros, then I would say March Madness gives small programs national attention and it creates shared national moments.
And it produces some of the greatest highlights in sports.
Shots that replay for decades now.
Okay, okay, the cons.
But critics, they also raise concerns. That's a con, right?
Player fatigue, commercial pressure, and the rise of sports gambling tied to brackets.
Now, for some fans, that adds excitement.
For others, it raises serious questions.
Either way, the madness continues every March.

Now, March Madness lasts about three weeks.
It begins with selection Sunday.
You can hear those envelopes opening.
Then the tournament begins.
Early rounds, Sweet 16, Elite 8, Final 4, and finally the national championship.
One team will cut down those nets.
And when they do, the madness ends.
Right in the middle of March Madness sits Another celebration. St. Patrick's Day. Green jerseys, Irish music. Packed with sports bars and tournament games playing on every television.
This is where basketball and Irish celebration collide in one giant party.
So why people love it? Well, it's. It's inspirational.
I mean, at its core, March Madness represents hope.
Every team believes they can win.
Every fan believes their bracket will survive.
And every year, It happens the moment, the moment that nobody predicted.
That is why the madness never gets old.
